The Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) is the largest union of American artists working in film, television, radio, and digital media. The organization was formed in 2012, when AFTRA (American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) and SAG (Screen Actors Guild) merged to create one powerful union.
One of SAG-AFTRA`s most essential functions is ensuring that actors receive fair compensation, benefits, and working conditions. Each year, SAG-AFTRA negotiates a new agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), the organization that represents the studios and production companies that produce most of the content in Hollywood.
The SAG-AFTRA agreement for 2018 is the latest iteration of this ongoing negotiation. The agreement covers a wide range of topics, from wages and residuals to safety and health standards on set.
One of the most significant changes in the 2018 agreement was an increase in minimum wage rates for actors. The minimum pay for actors working on motion pictures and high budget new media productions saw an increase of 2.5% in the first year of the agreement, followed by an additional 3% increase in the second year.
Additionally, the agreement addressed the issue of sexual harassment in the entertainment industry. The new agreement required that all productions have a dedicated sexual harassment representative on set, and mandated training for all members to better understand how to report and prevent harassment.
The 2018 SAG-AFTRA agreement also included provisions to improve safety standards on set, including better working conditions for stunt performers and more specific protocols for handling hazardous materials. The agreement also provided for better job security for actors, particularly those working on long-running television shows.
In summary, the 2018 SAG-AFTRA agreement was a significant step forward for actors and other industry professionals. It provided increased wages, improved working conditions, and better protections against sexual harassment and other forms of discrimination. As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, SAG-AFTRA will continue to work hard to ensure that actors and other professionals are fairly compensated and treated with respect.
